The Berners Library, is the quiet beating heart of the school. The library has an extensive and frequently updated collection of contemporary and classic fiction and curriculum appropriate non-fiction print materials. We also have a good range of electronic resources providing an introduction to the global academic world of digital research.
As well as supporting the main curriculum, these resources also support project-based qualifications such as HPQ and EPQ, promoting independent learning and self-motivation and giving pupils more choice in some aspect of their learning.
We are advocates of the philosophy that reading for pleasure enriches the whole person and actively encourage pupils to develop their literary explorations, participating in book award shadowing events such as Carnegie and Mann Booker to promote the best in contemporary fiction for all ages.
We provide a quiet studious environment and a safe-haven for pupils who may be struggling and work closely with our neighbours in the Academic Support Centre, providing a range of dyslexia friendly young adult fiction.
The Berners Library is open till 9pm weekdays for those who would like to take advantage of its resources, including the assistance of the Learning Resources Manager, during Prep time.
As well as being an academic hub, the library also has a social role, hosting the Debating Society and the Philosophy Forum as well as the Scholars’ Group.
