Two Framlingham College pupils were recognised for their ‘exceptional’ work by the Young Historian Project recently after submitting their school history projects into a national competition.
Millie Crewe’s look at the changing face of Dunwich was one of two winners of the Key Stage 3 Local History award whilst Isabella Prince’s project on the Bawdsey Radar Station was celebrated as the winner of the Key Stage 3 Spirit of Normandy Trust prize. The presentation ceremony was included as part of the Spirit of Normandy Trust’s reunion for D-Day veterans and there were close to fifty recipients of the Légion d’Honneur in attendance at North Weald Airfield in Essex who were all too happy to recall the events of 1939-1945 to spellbound guests.
Opportunities such as this are few and far between and getting rarer as many veterans are now in their mid-nineties. Nevertheless, Len Fox, formerly a Despatch Rider with the Royal Service Corps and Neville Howell of the Queen’s Royal Regiment provided excellent company throughout in what proved to be an unforgettable occasion. Fellow veteran Alan King summed it up best when asked how he remembered so much: “When you’re sent to meet your maker, you don’t forget the journey” ….and what a journey it was.
