Following hot on the heels of  National Poetry Day, and our own Poetry by Heart competition, eight children from Years 5 and 6 travelled to The Red House in Aldeburgh recently – home of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears – to attend a writers’ course with poet Ed Boxhall.

The children were encouraged to write freely about natural objects placed before them – a twig or dandelion ‘clock’ for instance and then join their writings with others to produce a poem. Following lunch, in the glorious garden and sunshine, the children wrote a letter to an alien about a person, place or animal and then turned this into poetry.

It was a stimulating experience and hopefully one which will encourage the children to write more creatively in the future.
