Television channels are frequently flooded with programmes relating to murder mysteries and the art of the Crime Scene Investigator.

Last Friday it was the turn of seventy-three Year 9 pupils, who donned their imaginary deerstalkers and set out to discover who had killed the fictitious Mr Tinker, Headmaster of Saxtead College. Confronted with codes to decipher, letters to translate, police interviews to unravel and poisons to identify, the teams of would-be detectives were given just seven hours to apprehend the assassin, avoiding the inevitable red herrings and dead end leads in the process. We may not have unearthed the next Sherlock Holmes in the process, but we did see ingenuity, imagination, teamwork and dogged determination in abundance!
