The recently opened Design Museum in London offered Year 12 Design & Technology students the opportunity to think about the role of design in the twenty first century, and through a serious of historically significant objects and products, consider ‘what is good design?’ from the perspective of designer, user and maker.

Whilst there we also took in a special exhibit focussing on California, and how the region has had a major influence on contemporary design and wider culture. Before returning home, the group also found time for a quick look around the V&A Museum, and were most specifically interested in the temporary exhibit Plywood: Material of the Modern World. Again, through a series of products and objects from furniture to skateboards, the students learned how this often overlooked material has shaped the modern world.
