Our Year 7 team of budding Chemists travelled on the 18th May 2017 to the Salter’s Chemistry Festival at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. There were 12 schools present with teams of three or four students ranging from 10 to 13 years old.

In their own words this is what they did:

Our first challenge of the day was to solve the murder of William MacSalter using chromatography and chemical reactions.  In this challenge we worked very well as a team and came third out of the twelve schools who attended.

The second challenge was the University Challenge. In this challenge we needed to use chemical reactions to make a compound to put out a fire. This was basically to make as much foam as possible. In this challenge our test runs were extremely good but we got unlucky on our final test.

While the judges calculated the results we watched an interesting and inspiring demonstration by Doctor Stephen Ashworth – one of the university professors. This was very interesting and we learnt a lot – it was all about Kitchen Chemistry! Soon after this great show it was time for the presentation.

We managed to come an amazing third place and we won multiple packs of atoms/molecules for the school. We also received a certificate, a Salter’s pen and a frisbee!

We all really enjoyed our trip to the UEA and we would like to thank Mrs Pearson-Shaul and Mrs Moon for organising this trip and being our fantastic leader!
