Our U18 and Colts rugby teams travelled to Uppingham School on Sunday for their Annual 7-a-side Tournament as preparations continued in advance of the Rosslyn Park National Schools’ 7s at the end of this month. The U18s had won the Plate trophy at the Northampton Saints 7s in February but this was the first outing for the Colts team.

Both teams had inauspicious starts before the Colts went on to defeat Bedford School, Stamford School and Denstone College, three rugby powerhouses, to reach the Cup Final. Unfortunately it proved to be one match too many as they fell to defeat against the hosts, who had also triumphed in the opening game of the competition.

The U18s played some spellbinding 7s at times and scored a try that will live long in the memory through Haydn Macaulay against Stamford School. They played Stamford for a second time in the Plate Final and suffered a cruel defeat by 7-10 with there being some doubt as to whether the playing time had been completed when the final whistle blew.

All in all, it was an excellent day and the Colts now look forward to playing in the Norwich School 7s on Sunday.
