Four potential medics from Year 11; Millie Crewe, Julia Häbe, Will Gladwell and Sam Ponty, attended the “So you think you want to be a doctor?” event at Ipswich Hospital on Saturday 21st April 2018.
This was an educational and entertaining experience which aimed to give students information about university applications to medical school, life as a junior doctor, as well as also being able to talk to some doctors-in-training about their experience. Julia said ‘I would definitely recommend the study day to anyone considering a career in medicine and I really enjoyed the atmosphere.’
In addition, there was the opportunity to undertake some hands on activities, such as learning how to put a needle into a vein (cannulation) and how to sew up a wound (suturing) – on dummy models! Will said ‘I found the experience very helpful in finalising my choice of studying Medicine and enjoyed cannulation the most’. Millie said’ ‘It was really interesting to perform procedures such as suturing and cannulation which are done every day at the hospital, and to learn the technicalities of these seemingly simple tasks.’
Everyone agreed that this was a really invaluable opportunity and experience so thank you to all involved from Ipswich Hospital in delivering this event.
