The Lower Sixth English Society have now reached the 17th Century in their chronological tour and, this time, students were competing to offer the best interpretation of a poem.

After a short lecture on the literary history of the ‘Cavalier’ and ‘Metaphysical’ poets of the 17th Century from Mr Goldsmith, students worked in pairs to look at some well-known poems of the period from writers such as Donne, Herrick and Lovelace. After the presentations to Mr Goldsmith and Miss Cranmer, the two winning students were judged to be Rob and Scarlett who offered some great insights into Andrew Marvell’s ‘A Dialogue Between the Soul and the Body’. Weighty stuff – and well handled!
