Year 8 French and Spanish students at the Prep School came together to create a magazine in these languages to develop their written and speaking skills and showcase how other languages can have real-world applications.

Head of Languages at the Prep School, Dominic Wade, said: “The idea came about because we wanted to work on a task that had practical relevance to the real world and life beyond school. Pupils loved working on the magazine from deciding on the content, to writing the articles and designing the layout.”

Articles inside the magazine include pieces by pupils about school sports and interviews with teachers. The magazine will be displayed digitally initially, as above.

Mr Wade added: “Working on the magazine helped pupils to engage with their language learning as they could see the practical relevance of their work. They enjoyed being creative, interviewing the Head, writing the articles and designing the magazine. The pupils were very impressed with how much they had achieved and how much they could communicate in a foreign language. We are hoping to publish the magazine termly and pupils are full of ideas for the next issues.

“Maybe one day, one of these pupils will become an journalist and will look back on the first magazine they made at the Prep school!”
