The History Society met for its last formal gathering of the year on Thursday 23rd March, where Mr Carl gave Years 12 and 13 something to think about on the rise of Hitler during the Weimar period.
He (Mr Carl, rather than Hitler, who was also keen at History) has sat under Professor Sir Ian Kershaw at Sheffield University, so he sprinkled his talk with reference to historians as well as young Adolf, and the illustrations delivered via computer kept visual learners engaged as well. Students took away an awareness of the vibrant culture of Weimar Germany and the contingent nature of much of the Hitler story. On the eve of the European Economic Community’s 60th birthday, as Britain launches itself on its own Sonderweg, there was much to ponder, any regrets mitigated by the cookies and coffee faithfully provided by the Catering Department.
