On Monday 20th January, Framlingham College Prep School entered a team of four pupils (one from each Year 3 to 6) into the National General Knowledge Championship. With more than 400,000 children taking part each year, it is the largest Inter-School quiz competition in the country. The Area Heat was generously hosted by Langley Prep at Taverham Hall and comprised of twelve teams from schools within Norfolk and Suffolk.

The event was hosted by a Quizmaster with team members using a personal wireless handset to instantly select their answers, although the team members were encouraged throughout to confer with the rest of their team before selecting their individual answers.  The show was projected onto a huge screen with instant on screen scoring which only added to the tension and excitement. One of the pupils commented on how it felt very much like a television gameshow!

Question topics included momentous events in history, geographical landmarks, art, music and literature, science, mathematics, cultures from around the world, current affairs and world knowledge from the past, present and future.

The FCPS team comprising of Florence Moore (Year 3), Ella Redstall (Year 4), Archie Bloore (Year 5) and team captain, Will Hazelgrove (Year 6), approached the event with a quiet sense of determination and confidence, albeit with a few butterflies in their tummies. The team displayed fantastic resilience after a challenging first round which saw them languishing at the bottom of the live league table; only for them to bounce back and steadily climb back up through the pecking order. By the halfway stage the team had risen into first place where they remained for the duration of the competition.

This was an outstanding achievement and it was wonderful to see the glowing sense of pride in the children’s faces. They worked brilliantly and cohesively as a team and it was clear how much fun they had over the course of the day.

The team now have the National Final in London to look forward to in June, which takes place at the Dominion Theatre, London.
