Framlingham College adopted Prostate Cancer UK as their Charity of choice this term. The students have taken the charity to heart and have worked hard to raise as much money as possible for the charity. The fund raising has become a fun activity in its own right, whilst presenting a good mix of competition amongst the students. One of the girl’s boarding houses single-handedly devised a variety of activities including a cake sale, car wash and busking on the Market Hill. The girls also persuaded their teachers to be ‘Sponged for charity’! Whole school events have included an Easter Hunt, own clothes day and bacon baps on Saturday mornings.
As a result of all their amazing efforts, the Chairman of the Charity, Mr Charles Packshaw personally collected the cheque for the monies raised. He personally thanked the students for their inventiveness and dedication to the cause.
As the students have been raising money, they have become aware of the impact they are having with real people. Some experienced close links with the disease itself. Even closer to home, one of the students father was diagnosed with prostate cancer this term and has already been operated on, and we are pleased to report that he has been given the all clear which only further champions the cause for Prostate Cancer UK.
James Beeby, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “It’s fantastic to see that Framlingham College decided to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. It is an incredible effort, one that will help us make prostate cancer a disease that the next generation of men do not fear.
“Currently one man an hour dies from prostate cancer in the UK. That’s 11,000 men a year. Based on current trends, if we ignore prostate cancer and do nothing, this number will rise to over 14,500 men a year by 2026. And by 2030 it’s predicted to be the most common cancer overall. Whatever you do together, big or small, you’ll be helping us push for real change, from more effective testing to better treatments.”
Paul Taylor the Headmaster of Framlingham College added, ‘It is our students who elect their ‘charity of the term’ each term, and for a number of reasons Prostate Cancer UK is one that is closer to their hearts than most. It has therefore been wonderful to see how committed they have been in raising money and we are all hugely proud of their efforts; their energy and inventiveness has been quiet inspiring!’.
