Nine students from Years 11 and 12 attended the Felsted Model United Nations Conference at the beginning of this week.
Representing Costa Rica and Senegal, they debated a variety of topics including religious extremism in the Middle East, nuclear disarmament, and same-sex marriage. All the students performed well – in particular, Amelia Schroeter held her own in the face of fierce questioning in the Human Rights Committee, Philip Lewellen spoke confidently in the Environment Committee, and Rhys Pearson-Shaul was a regular contributor to the Security Council with his insightful and stylish speeches. Highlights of the two days were Lulu Cingo being commended for his contributions to the Health Committee, and Jolyon Summers delivering the resolution he wrote to the full conference.
All the College students involved themselves enthusiastically, and have certainly gained a great deal of knowledge about important global issues, as well as some key debating skills.
