On Tuesday 4th December six Mathematics students from Years 12 and 13 travelled to Cambridge University for a series of lectures run by the Maths Inspiration team. The first talk was by Dr Paul Shepherd, who explained how he uses Mathematics to design and build large buildings including the Millennium Dome and Wembley Stadium. Bobby Seagull (of University Challenge fame) explained how Mathematics is used in the financial services (he was working for Lehman Brothers on Wall Street when it collapsed in 2008). Finally Ben Spark gave an inspirational talk on the mathematical beauty of circles, spirals and Mandelbrot sets.
