To celebrate National Poetry Day on October 4th, Framlingham College Prep School held their annual “Poetry By Heart” competition. Every child from Year 5 to Year 8 entered this inspiring competition for the chance to represent their year and become Junior or Senior Champion. English teachers listened to performances from each student before choosing a finalist from each English class.

The aim of the competition was to celebrate the joy of poetry and appreciate the richness of the spoken word. The contestants captivated the audience with superb performances of their chosen poems. They were also challenged to recite a classic poem.

The Juniors performed “The Word Party” by Richard Edwards and the Seniors performed “The Kraken” by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The judges found it very difficult to choose from such a high standard. After much deliberation, the Junior winner was Sofia Odiz for her moving performance of “Elizabeth Fry” by Jan Dean and the Senior prize was awarded to Charlie Hall for his entertaining rendition of “You’re Not Santa” by Michael Rosen.
