Girls’ 1st XI Hockey beat Cambridge University

Friday 22 Sep 2017

Framlingham College 3  –  0  Cambridge University

Having already had a very successful start to the season Fram 1st XI girls’ hockey team travelled to Cambridge on Monday to test themselves against the University 1st XI who play their Saturday hockey in the East Premier League just one tier below the National League.

The Framlingham side that features a number of junior internationals started extremely well and were soon threatening Cambridge’s goal on a number of occasions. The defence outletted the ball with calm ease and Molly Redgrove made a number of incisive long passes to the forward line to create circle penetrations.  Molly’s powerful slap at a penalty corner led to the opening goal as it rebounded off the line player’s foot only for Amy Goodwin to pounce on the rebound. The second goal came from an Abby Gooderham drag flick, low and powerful into the bottom corner. This was the reward from an impressive build-up of play from the excellent Lottie Summers in midfield that saw her carry aggressively and spin to place the ball on a foot in the D. The Cambridge students, in no way down and out, grew into the game and began to threaten with an impressive ball carrying midfield but Framlingham ran hard to get numbers around any counter attack threat and snuff it out before the scholars could do any damage. The third and final goal was finished off after a stunning move that ended in Lottie Riley pouncing on a rebound to slot home the third. The final 15 minutes was an entertaining affair with both teams attacking in numbers in search of goals with the pace of the game of the highest order.

Coach and Assistant Director of Sport, Jamie Kingstone said: “Framlingham should be very buoyed by a convincing 3-0 win over their older and more experienced opposition.”
