Taking part in one of these journeys is an enriching experience for the intrepid pupils who choose to go. And, given the destinations and activities on offer, most of the travellers see the trip as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Pupils – and the teaching staff who travel with them – will experience cultures and territories that exist on the other side of the world. They’ll also face the physical challenge of long treks, camping out, and working together on projects that give something back to local communities.
The children will learn more about themselves – and others – and discover how to operate within a supportive group of like-minded individuals. Increased self-confidence, deeper friendships, and the acquisition of invaluable skills and wonderful experiences, are among the benefits of taking part.
These journeys take place every two years, during Easter or summer holidays, and in recent years have taken pupils to: Borneo; Chile; Bolivia; Venezuela; China; Nepal; Peru; Tibet; Uganda; Namibia; Mount Everest and Morocco (Prep School).
The most recent trip took fifteen year 7 and 8s to the Azores. Their destination was São Miguel, the largest island, and especially seductive with its Sete Cidades and Fogo Lagoons, tea plantations, pineapple farms, underground caverns and whale watching opportunities. As the group explored the island they were constantly aware of the power that emanates from the earth which was felt in the geysers, hot thermal waters and volcanic lakes, as well as in the tasty “Cozido das Furnas” that are cooked inside the earth. During the trip the young expeditioners took it in turns to help lead and manage the trip and returned safe and well with fantastic memories to share.
