Year 9
All pupils in Year 9 follow a common curriculum.
All students study:
-
English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Technology
-
Art, Music, Drama, Religious Studies, Physical Education and ICT
Most students will also study two Modern Foreign Languages (French/German/Spanish are all available).
-
English as a Second Language (ESL) students will usually study only one Modern Foreign Language but those who need learning support will usually only study one.
-
English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History and Modern Foreign Languages are all taught in groups which are set by ability.
Technology, Art, Music, Drama, Religious Studies, Physical Education and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are taught in mixed-ability groups. ICT in Year 9 is the first year of a two year short course GCSE.
Monitoring Pupils' Progress
Progress is carefully monitored by Housemasters, Housemistresses, Heads of Department and Tutors. A staff meeting for Year 9 students takes place at the end of the autumn term and prior to the parents' meeting in May. A parents' meeting takes place at the end of the autumn term and a second meeting focusing on GCSE choices is held in May. Full reports are sent to parents in the spring and summer terms. Grades are posted home at the end of each half term. Tutors, who have particular responsibility for academic support, meet with their tutor group once or twice each week, as well as seeing individuals by arrangement.
